What’s this current obsession people have with tattoos?
Why is it something they actually choose?
There is a great beauty to unadorned human skin,
The silky soft patches under armpit and chin.
Why choose to cover it in some foreign text,
Which only looks good when your muscles are flexed?
Not to mention the fact it’s not a language you speak,
So you might just be covered in some barbaric batik!
And what’s with the bluebird, flying there on your shoulder?
It’ll be a bald eagle or vulture when you get older…
Call me old-fashioned and way out of date,
But a tattoo? No fear! I’m not tempting fate!
Tattoos

Ha ha great ditty.
I have to admit to having tattoos. One which is now over 25 years old. And one which is 3 years old. I love well drawn tattoos. Mine are both hidden from view, but represent parts of my life and I would like more.
Here’s to tattoos π
Some of my friends love them and they all say, like you, that they mark milestones in their lives…
I have a tattt: it’s the oening words from Caliban’s speech : be not afeard. I find it consoling!! Had it done at 62.
Coo er! An educated tatt! Whatever next!
I nver fancied tattoos and never got awed by them ! They seem painful and silly to me π
Liked the way u wrote
Dropping by from A to Z – http://afshan-shaik.blogspot.in/
Thank you! I don’t like them either!
I don’t have a tat but I sure thought of getting one.
Stop in from A to Z challenge.
Coffee is on
Thanks for commenting! Good luck with the rest of the challenge!
I will also to admit to 2. Again, in places that are hidden under regular clothes. One represents my starting to play hockey in my late 30’s and the second represents my treehugger-ness. Most people don’t even know I have them, and that is ok as they are for me. They were painful I will admit that, but the first one- I had a lot of endorphins released while I was getting it. It was kind of weird. The second one just hurt more. It was on my spine and it just hurts more over boney areas.
I may get a third to represent my daughter and it will also be somewhere hidden. I work in a professional field and the ink would be frowned on.
It isn’t for everyone, but it sure does seem a lot more popular than in the past, and rarely does someone have just one!

Good for you! What will you choose tp represent your daughter, d’you think?
I am ambivalent about tattoos. I see the beauty in some, especially sleeves but will not tattoo my body. I like them from afar, from an artistic standpoint, only when they are artfully rendered.
I get what you say, Stephanie. Just think skin is beautiful without decoration.
I have 2 tattos, I do like tattos but not horrible tacky ones. Saying that I regret one of mine because I had it at the top of my arm. That was 17 years ago! It’s not the tattoo I regret just the place.
Funny enough my husband said they were discussing them on LBC. The presenter was against them and saying he didn’t understand. A guy then called up and said he had one done of his old dog, basically him and his wife were going through a rough patch so he went shooting with dog as s new hobby it was a working dog. Things got worse withe wife and he was extremely depressed and decided he was going to end his life. He got out the gun and put on the sofa and went to get tge bullets. When he came back the dog was sitting on the sofa on top of the gun. He growled at the man an wouldn’t let him take it. He came to his senses after that, so the dog saved his life. The dog then died and his ashes were buried in the garden. Him and his wife got divorced and he had to sellthe house so got a tattoo of the dog cuz he had to leave ashes behind.
The presenter felt a bit bad at the end of the phone call. Sad story.
Very sad yet wonderful story. And I get completely why the guy would want to memorialise his dog in such a personal way..,
Weirdly, I thought they were gross when I was younger, but as I approach 40, I kinda dig them. Your poem speaks the truth, though!
Thanks Kari!
My opinion about tattoos is similar to yours. π
Aha! Like minds!
I’m not sure I could ever have a tattoo myself, BUT I do admire a beautiful tattoo and find the history fascinating (i.e., that sailors tattooed themselves so they could be identified if they drowned, or Maori warriors used tattoos to intimidate the enemy). Funny that I wrote about tattoos earlier for this A to Z Challenge on “I is for Ink” . . . http://bethandwriting.blogspot.com/2014/04/i-is-for-ink.html
How amazing! I must check your blog ou!
i don’t think I’ll ever get a tattoo. It’s not my thing. But I’m amazed with tattoo artists. It’s an art that requires extreme precision. I got a lot of friends with tattoos.
Me too. And some of the artwork is brilliant. I just don’t think skin needs painting…it is beautiful as it is…
Ha! I have a blue jay on my shoulder – that made me laugh.
Glad you enjoyed it!
