The World Beyond My Window

The world beyond my window

Is unfussy,  laid-back, cool,

Palm trees blowing gently

Down by a small rock pool,

You see my home is coastal,

It is built upon the beach,

The breakers and white horses,

Are just beyond my reach.

A lounger sits there patiently,

Waiting for my  bod,

And I’ll lie there in the semi-shade,

And gently snooze or nod.

An empty bottle on the ledge,

Proves how hot it’s been,

I need a nice cold, ice cold Coke,

It’s part of my routine.

And when the shadows lengthen,

A storm lantern lights my way,

To bring me safely back inside,

At the dying of the day.

The Bed

Mum took me to the vets,

And although it’s a place for pets,

I didn’t want to go.

Other times I’ve been, my balls got snipped,

I had injections, got microchipped,

I really didn’t want to know!

But yesterday was not so bad,

Although I felt threatened and rather sad,

I met some very nice people instead.

And mum felt she had to do something nice,

So we went to the shop, and in a trice,

She’d bought me a brand new bed!

family, home

She walked into an empty house,

Not just any house,

Her family home,

All her life.

She stood in each room,

Each empty room,

And although her footsteps

Sounded loud and hollow,

Àlmost mocking her

In the silence.

Her memories peopled

Every room.

Laughter,

Love,

Life,

Crashed in.

A house,

Just another house on the street,

To the idle eye,

But to her,

A casket of precious, priceless treasure.

Heart

Be still and listen to the beat of your heart.

Is it the persistent percussion

Of stress,

Exertion?

Or the slow church tower chime

Of calm?

If you listen to your breath,

In. Out.

And how it matches the cadence

Of the blood

Pumping through

Arteries and veins,

You catch a glimpse

Of the miracle that is

Life.

I love it when you throw my ball,

It’s really no trouble to chase it at all!

I love to chase it and bring it back,

And I’ll keep on doing so till I hit the sack!

Ribs

Nothing like a rack of ribs,

Sticky, unctuous,…you’ll need bibs!

‘Cause they’re covered in marinade & rub,

That makes them an irresistible form of grub!

And baked for many, long, long hours,

That’s how we do it if you come to ‘ours’,

Flesh almost falls off bone, they’re sweet and sticky,

Staying clean eating them’ somewhat tricky!

You’ll want to gnaw each bone till it’s free of meat,

I tell you, these ribs are a scrumptious treat!

The Unicorn

Today I’m modelling the unicorn,

‘Cause my mad hair’s in the shape of a horn.

Don’t mess with me, I’m a mythical beast,

And I’m liable to love you to death at least.

The Garden

This is my garden, it’s  small but it’s great,

I love to watch things procreate.

We’ve planted herbs and the odd tree,

And a mint hedge from which I can  make my tea.

A clematis looked as if it had died,

But it’s thriving on the compost we supplied.

A haven of green in a busy town,

Keeps me from feeling low or down.

They’ve erected a gazebo in High Level Drive,

But it’ll blow away before all the voters arrive!

Europe!! Are we in or out?

Endless debates at which politicians shout…

BREXIT-ers, all say their opposition are voting with fear,

Well, I am NOT, let me make that clear!

I am voting with conscience and a very clear head,

Let’s hope others do too, and are not misled.
