Santa Anna labelled himself Napoleon of the West,
But was he an idiot, as some have confessed?
He led the Mexican Army in its fight against Spain,
Bloody and brutal, independence their aim.
He lost his leg in a battle against the French,
And had it buried it with full honours in its very own trench.
He then used a prosthetic till “captured” by the USA,
Where it resides in Springfield to this very day!
The Mexican Government repeatedly request it’s return,
But it’s a museum exhibit from which we can learn?!
*Antonio de Padua María Severino López de Santa Anna y Pérez de Lebrón, or Santa Anna
I lean toward the idiot hypothesis, I must confess . . . but he sure cleaned up pretty, according to your painting!
I do too, Amy…bad enough to lose one leg. Ridiculous to bury it with full military honours. Careless to have your prosthetic leg captured by the enemy…
A lot like Pancho Villa, a couple of crazies in Uniform. Then of course, History is never kind to the losers. I believe we’re had our crazies but we are the ones writing the books so it doesn’t show
Aha! You are not alone, William!
Having studied a lot of Mexican and California history, I think Santa Ana was a narcissistic fool who took advantage of a lot of situations to gain power. He never had the welfare of the Mexican people in mind and caused more harm than good. And, due to his egomania, tens of thousands of the poorest and landless died.
I couldn’t agree with you more
