In North Transylvania there’s an amazing spot,
That’s an Orthodox/Gothic melting pot,
The wooden churches of Maramures,
Display architectural vernacular truly pure.
All eight wooden churches stand on bases of stone,
Yet each one shows traces of that village alone.
After the last Tatar invasions of 1717,
These churches were restored to their splendour Byzantine.

Wonderful…wow, I think every other Translyvania picture I’ve ever seen was of castles dark at night in the Dracula type tradition – just lovely to see a day time beautiful image with such a charming poem to accompany it!! π
Thanks Helena! They are stunning, aren’t they?
Yes, very beautiful!! π π
Sorry -Helen! All thumbs today!
What beautiful and unusual churches.
Aren’t they wonderful?
I love Transylvania! I went there to work for a charity when I was (much) younger. Your post brought back some happy memories…
Glad to hear it!
I, like Helenvalentina only pictured Dracula as living in Transylvania, nice to learn, interesting that they are built so close together.
Wonderful, huh?
What a beautiful picture. I love seeing a church with a steeple in a landscape. It reminds me of how people through the ages have tried to point others upward, to God. Here’s a spot on earth that I never would have known of, except for your poem. Nicely done, Caro.
Thank you Amy
I want to go there – now! Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful.. And great poetry. I love that it’s a poem that I – and everyone else – can learn from.
Came by from the UBC on FB.
I’ll be back.
Love your site. π
Thank you so much. Glad you enjoyed it. And good luck with UBC!
This is wonderful, caring and seems to be so true. Thanks for sharing it with me.
You are welcome Melinda
