The Sahara is the hottest place on earth,
And has the most enormous girth,
It is the size of China or the USA,
The Atlantic one side, the Med the other way.
Some of the dunes are 580 feet high,
And really do look as if they touch the sky.
Sand seas or ergs are it’s signature though,
It mainly consists of rocky plateaux.
It is shaped by the wind and occasional rain,
And rivulets that appear then vanish again.
Because the tilt of the earth is degrees 22-24.5,
In 15,000 years, the Sahara will come alive,
It will flourish and prosper, become lush and green,
And nary a sand dune will be seen…
The Sahara

I did not realize that in a few thousand years (ok, I am not sure that you can call fifteen a few or not…but I am going to anyways) that the Sahara is going to end up being green.
Nor did I but because of the earth’s tilt, that’s what it used to be like and what it will be again…!
Actually, for very brief periods of time, on certain occasions, I hear Death Valley has been hotter. But beyond a certain point, any further heat is enough to kill. And one thing the Sahara has: Size. And the size and constant heat, without shelter are the deadly bits of it. A good chunk of our buddy Mansa Musa’s empire, as well as a number of fabled “lost cities” have been swallowed whole by it. But there, enough inspiration for you tonite.
True re Death Valley, but not consistently so…!
Hi Caro,
Some great information there about my continent Africa! I know that there are a lot of research on way where scientist are trying to find ways of making part of the sahara green. Somehow I think the it is also good not to interfer with nature…
I couldn’t agree with you more, Elizabeth, we’ve interfered with nature too much already!
Imagine that – the Sahara, green…My kind of poem too – one that rhymes!
I know! Seems extraordinary doesn’t it? But many moons ago it was green! Xx
Your poem would be a great way to remember the facts about the Sahara … I don’t think we should mess with nature either. Sighs.
Sad isn’t it what we are doing to our beautiful planet!
Incredible. You’ve brought up many facts about the Sahara that I certainly wasn’t aware of! I’m going to have to do some more study now, and I’ll rope the kiddos in to do it with me. Geography class!
Have fun! Xx
Great way to slip off to the African continent, if but for a moment. Thanks, Caro.
I am glad you enjoyed if Belinda
Ah… nice pix, clever poem. No desire to see this one though!
Not in for the searing heat?!
