They called it Marmageddon,
Back in August 2012,
An earthquake closed a factory,
Panic buying off the shelves.
The food concerned was Marmite,
That luscious, salty spread,
Made by Sanitarium,
A company in NZ.
.
You “either love it or hate it”,
It elicits nausea or balm
In NZ just five months ago,
The PM urged some calm,
‘Cos people, desp’rate without it,
Were raiding friends and shops and bars,
To fulfill a fix, to get their kicks,
They were auctioning half full jars!
So what’s your verdict, dear reader?
Is it a force for evil or good?
Is it the filthiest taste on the planet?
Or the latest Superfood?
I personally love ‘my mate Marmite’,
For me, it’s the tops, there’s no doubt!
But according to millions of others,
The verdict is, strangely, still out!
Marmageddon

I have some interesting facts for you here. Marmite, as made in the jar shown at the top of your page is made in the UK at one factory in Burton on Trent by Unilever. In New Zealand there is a different product made there in a different kind of jar. You can get the British version in the Antipodes but it is under the brand name Our Mate. Personally, I hate it on it’s own but use it as a stock. My partner loves it and is the Microbiology Lab manager at the Marmite factory 🙂
Thanks for your comments Janice! I did know that Marmite came in a different-shaped jar in NZ, but I chose not to publish a picture of it because the normal jar is so iconic! Huzzah for your partner and a smaller huzzah to you for at least using it as stock!
I believe we would only have it in very special shops on this side of the pond. I must take a look around and see what I find. I have visited the UK a few times but never had the pleasure of trying it. So the search begins. What is the ingredients? Or is that secret as some companies tend to be? Thanks for the post, I like a new adventure.
Hi Wwilliam! Beware! It IS a product you either love or hate, as the advertising rather bravely states, but even those who hate it tend to add it their stock even so…
Forgot to tell you William that It is a yeast product so suitable for vegetarians…if you are a hater, you might still use it to make stock, if you are a lover, you use it on all kinds of things!
My British gran used to have this and growing up I know I tasted it but can’t seem to remember the flavor. Think I’ll pick up a jar the next time I’m in a food import store!
It is marketed in the UK as “you either love it or hate it” and opinion is definitely polarised! I am a lover! It is a yeast product so suitable for vegetarians…
I LOVE MARMITE !!! You wrote a poem about MARMITE – You are a superstar !
I loves Marmite too! And Marmite is the superstar!
