Henry VIII’s Children

images-31Who were the children of Henry Eighth?

Some of whom followed a different faith,

There was Edward the Sixth and Lady Jane Grey,

Though as a queen she lasted for only 9 days,

Before Mary deposed her and cut off her head,

And became “Bloody Mary”, the Protestants’ dread!

That was after Edward inherited when just a lad still,

But at only sixteen he became mortally ill.

Mary succeeded and killed most of her foes,

How Elizabeth survived, no one really knows!

Elizabeth 1 was a truly great queen,

Her like as linguist and scholar had rarely been seen.

Her reign is now known as the Golden Age,

With nautical conquests at every stage.

She died at Richmond in 1603,

The last of the Tudor monarchy.

She reigned for 40 odd years, died in her 70th year,

And her like as a monarch won’t reappear.

Fancyapint.com pub pictureIt’d be nice to go out to lunch today

To a pub, not far away,

To sit and drink, and chat and eat,

The setting will make the day complete,

It’s the Dulwich Wood House, near Sydenham Wood,

The building’s pretty, the food is good,

What a delightful, peaceful, restful way,

To spend a splendid, lovely day…

A Visit To The Doctor

images-6A visit to the doctor always entails

Giving over endless intimate and rather gruesome details

About pills you take and the effects they’ve had,

On why they’re good, or why they’re bad,

On the fact that one pill involves taking four more

Because the side effects leave you feeling quite sore,

And severely depressed and horribly sick

Or feeling like you’ve been hit by a brick,

And your head’s a mess, you’re in a fog,

You’re not running on digital but analogue!

Your skin is itching, it’s raw, it’s red

You cannot count how many tears you’ve shed,

You’d like the doc to prescribe an elixir to make you feel well,

Or better still, an ice-cold glass of Californian Zinfandel!

images-5I just love these creatures,

What’s not to like?

Zebras with zigzags

Of  black and white…

Their markings don’t allow them

To cower and hide

From lions who consider them

Lunch on the side!

An African plain…

What’s there in the grass…?

A herd of jazz donkeys

And they’re colourfast!

London

imagesLondon is a special place,

A city that just thrives on space,

If you stay in the West End,

There’s a fact on which you can depend,

It’s just as full of parks and green

As night life or the clubbing scene.

Stroll along the Serpentine,

Find a bistro in which to dine,

Visit the chimps in Regent’s Park Zoo,

Take a trip south from Waterloo.

Take a slow whirl on the Millennium Wheel,

Visit Tussauds, it’s quite surreal.

There are numerous great things to do or see,

But I LOVE London’s greenery…

A Nice Cold Coke

images-2What is it about a lovely cold can of coke,

That tingles the taste buds, makes your senses smoke?

I can try vanilla or diet, cherry, or zero,

But it’s the regular sort makes me feel like a hero.

It’s a taste that refreshes, whatever the job,

It lightens and brightens and tightens your gob,

On a hot day I like the feel of an ice cold coke on my skin,

So Pepsi is out, Coca Cola is IN!

Laughter

With thanks to the wonderful Jackie Guy, to whom this post is dedicated.
Laughter. Such a wonderful word! Such a fabulous sensation! Such a tremendous feeling. Laughter, it seems to me, is almost as precious as the air we breathe… I love to laugh. How cool is it to share something funny with someone you love?  Just how GOOD does it make you feel?
And then the words we use to describe the way we laugh. Have you ever stopped to consider them? It is almost as if they were anthropomorphic or onomatopoeic. Giggle. Snigger. Chortle. Chuckle. Guffaw. Titter. Cackle. Snort. And perhaps, more loosely, making whoopee?! And the act that produces laughter? Beguilement. Pleasure. Diversion. Cheer. Gratification. Fun. Merriment. Mirth. Each one so perfectly describes the way we felt at the time. The different circumstances that have made us feel happy.
And how about the emotions we experience when we laugh? We fizz, we sparkle, we shake, we crack up. Research has shown that the health benefits of laughter are enormous. Research studies have shown that laughter can relieve pain, reduce stress, bring greater happiness, increase immunity. Positive psychology maintains that a propensity for laughter and a sense of humour is one of the 24 core signature strengths that we can possess. One study maintained that children laugh as many as 400 times per day, and adults only 15 times. That is a pretty poor effort on the adult front, don’t you think?
Consider this: laughter  increases our level of endorphins and neurotransmitters. It enhances the effect of T-cells, and encourages further growth of antibody-producing cells, strengthening the immune system. A deep belly laugh exercises the diaphragm, contracts the abs and works the shoulders, leaving muscles relaxed and de-stressed afterward. Laughter provides both physical and emotional relief, a workout for the heart, and distracts us from any negative emotions. Most important of all, it is a sociable process, it connects us to others. Laughter’s contagious in the best of all possible ways.
My good friend, Jackie Guy, a fellow Jamaican, always has me in stitches every time I see him. Sadly, for my emotional health, this is not often enough. Happily, for the muscles in my abdomen, it is probably just as well! He always walks on the sunny side of the street, even when troubles might reasonably wear him down. He is a positive force for good!  Happily, his myriad contributions to this world of ours have recently been recognized with an MBE.
So let me leave you with a word from the great man himself. With the last joke Jackie told me.
A Jamaican was asked to distinguish between the word “finished” and the word “complete” because they were synonymous in the dictionary.
The Jamaican replied, “Well, when you find a good woman, your life is complete.”
“When you find a bad woman, you’re finished!”
“But when a good woman find you with a bad woman, your life is completely finished!”

IN MEMORIAM MARK ORME

31 Wednesday Oct 2012

This was written to Sarah, Mark’s wife.
Mark put himself through endless treatments because he was determined to live, but he also told me the following:
He said that he came to Leonardis for treatment and had tried all sorts of other treatments in order to cling on to life like no tomorrow and for as long as he possibly could. But he also said that ultimately he knew that the illness would probably take him. So he was determined that death would not beat him. That he would stay as fully in the present as he possibly could so he did not ever regret wasting a single second of it, of what life had in store for him. He said he wanted to savour every second of his time with you and the kids and he would. Fully. No looking back because the past was gone and that there was no room for any regrets or recriminations, no looking forward because there was no point in second guessing what was to happen in the future. That the only time of which he or anyone could be certain was NOW. So NOW is where he always wanted to be. And where anyone who knew him would always find him.
I do not need to tell you that your husband was an extraordinary man. I admired him more than I can say.
