Colours

Standing

In a field in Provence

Canary yellow

In a sea of lavender

Two bold colours

That complement

And the sweet heady smell

Of lavender

Intoxicates

And invades my senses

The Gate

The tree-lined avenue,

I remember it well,

Leading down to the gate

To my father’s house.

It was grand, imposing,

Both avenue and gate,

Framing the promise

Of the gracious and

Beautiful house

That lay beyond.

Tracks

The railway tracks

Unfold

Into an unknown landscape.

The steel ties,

Proud of the gravel,

March into the distance.

The yellow leaves of Fall

Arching gracefully

Overhead.

The Brave Plant

Slender, tender shoots,

Green as green,

Challenging

The drabness

Of the fence

Against which they grow.

Life, defying the odds.

Empty Streets

The streets are deserted,

Everyone closeted indoors,

Because it has rained now for days,

And the streets are awash.

The city looks somehow

Cleaner, brighter,

As a result,

And the trees cling forlornly

To their last few leaves.

Shades of Autumn

Green for those trees that haven’t turned,

Yellow,

Orange,

Ochre,

Burnt Sienna,

The shades of Autumn,

The colours of Fall.

A Mountain Village

A village

Clinging tenaciously

To the hillside

Each house

Rooted to its own little plot

To prevent it

Tumbling downward

Floating

Weightless,

Floating,

A blossom,

Drifting on the breeze,

And all around it

Is frozen

in timelapse.

Homeward Bound

We have been to the market

And the waterhole today

And now we are homeward bound

Goods balanced carefully

On strong slender necks

Each basket contains some morsel

For dinner tonight

We shall pool our resources

And feast
