Love Crashed In

When love crashed into this world of mine,

I sensed something that I can’t define,

But this I know, it felt sublime,

And it began with you.

When love crashed in because of you,

It began to change all that I knew,

It tipped my expectations quite askew,

And I began to just believe.

When you showed me what I could achieve,

I wanted to just up and leave,

Needing neither succour nor reprieve,

To set my course aright.

So here we are, just you and I,

Reaching for our stretch of sky,

No sea too wide, nor peak too high,

 And love our guiding light.

Tuscan Rain

Thoughts of Tuscany.

Colour,

Heat.

Ripe tomatoes,

Balsamic vinegar,

And olive oil.

Sunshine on our heads,

Wine in our hands,

And a kiss on our lips.

Yet today,

Here,

On this beautiful street,

The world’s broken out in a rash.

A collage of umbrellas,

Against the rain.

Emma

We know that today will bring a great deal of pain,

For it will be a long time before you emerge once again,

This day is the day that you embarked on your life,

And yet at this moment the hurt cuts like a knife,

But know this, dear sister, that you’re first in our brains,

Today it’s your image that haunts and remains,

For, on your birthday, just one thing is clear,

How much those around you all love you my dear.

The Lady In Red

It was an elaborate staircase

Bordered by lamps

That seemed suspended in space

They spread a muted glow

Through the crushed raspberry sky

For the sun was fogged into submission

A lone raven flew into frame

As if onto the set

Of a Hammer horror movie

And then

At the top of the staircase

A lady in red

Stepped into view

Winter Largesse

Someone very kindly left

This nut for me to eat.

In winter, when I am bereft,

It is a tasty treat.

So thank you for your kind largesse,

It’s a welcome meal, I must confess,

And I’ll gorge till I’m replete!
