A’s For Anita

love

It is our first wedding anniversary today so I wanted to mark the occasion with a poem for my beautiful wife, Anita-Clare.

A’s for amour, for passion, for love,

As when my hand fits yours like a comfortable glove.

A’s for affection, for instant rapport,

For that fatal attraction, well you know the score.

A’s for the ambition to be by your side,

We are open and honest, there’s nothing to hide.

A’s for arrival, the moment we met,

A bolt from the blue I’ve not recovered from yet.

A’s for Anita, the love of my life,

My soulmate, my succour, my lover, my wife.

The Car

My uncle’s car.

It sat four square.

It felt comfortable,

Cosy,

Safe.

I also felt like a Maharajah,

When I was a passenger in it,

Since it looked as if it belonged

On the streets of Delhi or Mumbai.

The View

From way up here,

In my room at the top of the house,

Cloud and fog

Often bank below me,

But I still have a view,

And what a view!

The Red Banner

A flag,

Potent symbol of a nation,

A link to the 18th and 19th centuries,

And the Ottoman Empire.

Red, to represent war and the survival of it,

A white crescent moon and a star,

Symbolising Osman I’s dream

Of a moon rising from the breast of a judge,

Whose daughter he wanted to marry.

When full, the moon descended into

Osman’s own chest,

A tree grew from his loins,

Lush, strong,

That covered the entire world,

And the world flourished in its shadow.

A red flag,

With a whIte crescent moon and a star,

Banner of the Ottoman Empire,

National flag of Turkey.

Vertical Visual

A forest in the snow.

All in sight is vertical.

Black on white,

White on black.

With a low sun

Throwing vertical washes

Of colour,

Through the trees,

Highlighted

By the shadows.

Orion

The giant huntsman

Of Greek mythology.

Orion could walk on the waves

Because of his father, Poseidon.

Killed by a scorpion,

The goddesses asked Zeus

To place him in the heavens.

So here he is,

Orion.

The Cathedral

The path was like an aisle.
Straight as a dye.
The trees bent in overhead
A vault,
A shelter, but spectacular.
They call this part of the wood
The cathedral,
Naturally.

Tightly furled,

Perfect package,

Like old-fashioned confectionery,

Hand-made rock, perhaps?

Cherry blossom,

And someone ready to taste!
