Driving home,

It was a long, hard journey,

Through the driving rain,

Driving home.

Then the sun broke through

The lowering cloud,

A rainbow of colour

Lit the sky,

And I became the pot of gold,

As I was driving home.

Like the ducks beside them

And the water

Rippling

In concentric circles

A study in sunshine

And geometry

It was a misty morning,

The sun rising,

Hard and uncompromising,

Yet somehow also gentle,

To colour the world with warmth.

The day was dying,

The sun setting

But the world came alive,

With fireflies intent

On brightening the semi-gloom.

Just a bowl of fruit,

Raspberries,

Blackberries,

Blueberries,

And a desire

To eat them.

Travelling away from the Golden Horn,

Across the Sea of Marmara, 

Sails the ferryboat.

It carries with it

The weight of history,

Shades of Byzantium,

Traces of the Silk Route,

And romance, intrigue,

And adventure.

I came across a stretch of river,

And I thought that I’d walked

Into a painting by Corot.

The trees crowded along the water’s edge,

The fields were verdant and lush, 

And I half expected a winsome figure

To wander into the landscape to join me.

A lone gondolier

Punting his craft

Through the choppy waters

Of the grand canal,

Under a slightly threatening sky.

And the taller buildings

Highlighted and gilded

By the tentative Rays

Of a reluctant sun.

Best not to get too close,

Best not get too personal,

To the shadow on the wall.

So, from a distance,

I will admire

The shadow on the wall.

A known capo,

Whose raison d’etre

Is watchfulness,

The shadow on the wall.

Here to protect
