Riffs, Scales and Arpeggios

An exercise

In black and white

Of sight and sound.

If we balance here,

On the black notes,

Can we dive into the

White wall of sound below,

Of riffs, of scales, of arpeggios.

We’d been abandoned,

Long ago,

The house and I.

Yet my first instinct,

Is to my tribe,

So I lie here,

On the doorstep,

Awaiting their return.

Provence

Finger after finger,

Rank after rank,

Of perfectly purple,

Manicured lavender bushes.

One sense tumbles into another,

As the sight

Brings the smell

Of Provence.

Lilies

A study,

In pink,

In white,

In green,

The lilies,

And the lily pads.

A study,

In geometrics,

In curls,

In ovals,

In scalloped stretch,

Of burgeoning

Growth,

On fine,

Straight stems,

The lilies,

On the lily pads.

The sun is coming up,

And where its warmth

Touches the earth,

It is transformed

By a path

Of its glow.

A kudu silhouetted

Against the setting sun,

Curved horns

Scything the air,

Potent symbol of Africa

You were sending

A birthday  card

To your biggest sister

And you couldn’t reach the box

Because your little legs couldn’t

Let you stretch up that high

(Mine can barely either)

So I picked you up

So you could post your card.

The Peacock

I stumbled into

A secret garden

Hidden behind

A huge oak door

And found magic

An unknown gardener

With a loving hand

Had created

A floral peacock

Of simple white flowers

More beautiful

Than the bejewelled creature

It emulated

The mountain

In sunshine

Like a piece

Of white

Toblerone chocolate

Still in its gold

Paper wrapper

I’m tired of jumping from tree to tree,

And high enough to evade the cat,

I fancy a bit of revelry,

I want to be carefree – stuff like that.

So I found this nice umbrella,

To make me chic, to give me shade,

Don’t you think I’m a splendid fella,

D’you like the improvements that I’ve made?
